About Bamboo

Bamboo is a unique and beautiful plant that's often misunderstood. Many people are unaware of the difference between running bamboo and clumping bamboo.

Running bamboo is an invasive plant that can spread underground, with new culms (stems) surfacing up to 6 metres from the original plant each growing season. NSW Bamboo does not produce or sell any forms of running bamboo.

Clumping bamboo is non-invasive. New culms (stems) grow directly next to the original plant.

About Clumping Bamboo

Clumping bamboo doesn't run or invade the surrounding area. New culms (stems) pop up each summer around the outside edge of the clump. It can be grown in the ground or within pots.

It is adaptable, making it ideal for a variety of uses, like being a privacy screen, a shady spot, a noise barrier, a windbreak, or a tropical garden paradise.

Why plant clumping bamboo?

  • It makes an attractive ornamental plant
  • It can be planted at any time of the year
  • It's fast-growing
  • It screens out wind and noise
  • It provides great privacy
  • It's drought-tolerant and adaptable to a wide range of conditions
  • It has a shallow root system
  • It can be trimmed and hedged
  • It's low maintenance

About Gracilis (Slender Weaver)

Bambusa textilis var 'Gracilis'. This variation is our most sought-after bamboo. The demand for this plant has been so great that we are currently focusing our propagation on this product to meet the needs of our customers.

Gracilis is the best bamboo for privacy. Its upright, compact habit allows it to form a dense privacy screen, even in n narrow gardens. Because it is non-invasive, it does not encroach on garden space, making it the perfect choice for use in high-density housing settings.

Its full-grown height of 8-9 metres allows it to screen up to 2 stories and more. Plants spaced 1 metre apart in a 50 cm wide garden bed will form a living fence and create an attractive privacy screen. Gracilis Slender Weaver stays lush and green all year long. It is both frost-tolerant and drought hardy and can be pruned to size.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Height 8 to 9 m
  • Clump diameter 50 cm (up to 150 cm after several years)
  • Habit: Straight and graceful with large green leaves.

Maintenance:

  • Trim once a year in winter, but it can be manicured more often if desired.
  • Old culms (stems) may be pruned from the edge of the plant after a few years.

Conditions:

  • Apart from enjoying typical tropical and temperate climates, this hardy plant will tolerate wet areas, drought, and temperatures as low as -9 degrees Celsius.
  • It has proven to be successful and hardy in regions from Melbourne to Cairns and beyond.

About Planting and Care

Choose a Site

  • Bamboo is very adaptable and thrives in a variety of settings.
  • If your soil has good drainage, you can dig a hole bigger than your pot and then partially backfill it using soil mixed with compost and a little dolomite. If your soil has a high clay content and poor drainage, you can plant into a mound of good-quality soil mixed with compost.
  • If you want to ensure that your bamboo does not grow right up to a path or boundary, you can place a Rhizome barrier where you want the plant growth to stop.

Planting

  • Place the plant in the hole or mound and gently tamp down the soil.
  • Water thoroughly.
  • Add some compost, complete fertiliser, and a 10-cm layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Care and Maintenance

  • Once bamboo is established, it is very low maintenance, but it is very important to give it plenty of water while your plant is becoming established. We recommend watering heavily (enough to soak the root ball) twice a day for the first four weeks and then daily for the next four weeks.
  • Unless you are planting in a high wind area they generally don't require staking.
  • Once a year, add some complete fertiliser.
  • After a few years, you can reduce the size of the plant by removing old stems from the edge of the plant as required.
  • You can leave your bamboo to do its thing, or you can prune it to whatever height you desire.
